Guess Who’s Coming to Zede’s? Karen Linduska!

Zede’s Sewing Studio is proud to welcome nationally renowned fiber artist Karen Linduska back to Columbia, MO. Karen will teach two workshops on March 24th: Decorative Stitched Garden and the Stitched Tree Class- you don’t want to miss either of them!

Karen has spent the last 12 years perfecting her decorative stitching techniques.  She uses the decorative stitches on your machine that you may have just used for borders and distorts them into engaging organic shapes.  There is some great eye candy on her site, and I’ll include some photos here too.

Linda Bratten interviewed Karen at the 2010 AQS show in Paducah.  The video is a little hard to hear, so turn up your speakers- the one thing Karen says loud and clear is “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes!”

In the video she mentions that she’s working on a book for AQS- well, it came out this last summer, and we love it!!!  It’s called Your Machine’s Decorative Stitches.

Linda Bratten uses this book in Fiber Fun, a continuing education class that teaches you to loosen up a little bit with your sewing machine!  If you haven’t had any experience with Karen’s methods and you’re interested in attending her workshop, consider signing up for Fiber Fun.  It will get you “in the mood” to play around with your machine in ways you never thought possible.  Also, you’ll buy the book at Zede’s, and then Karen can sign it when she’s here!

Sign up before the classes fill up!  Call the shop with any questions you have at 573.874.2500.

How to Make a “Read.” Bag for the Jumpstart Program

The time has come once again to make “Read” Bags. Last year, our lovely stitching community stepped up to the plate and made 250 book bags for disadvantaged children in Columbia, MO.

Read more about the Jumpstart program here.  Read about what you can do to support early childhood education in Columbia, MO.

We’re asking for your help again, here’s what you can do:

-Donate fabric to the “Read” Bag program: A minimum of one half yard will do the trick for one bag.  You can give us as much as you want to get rid of!

- Help make the bags.  Watch the video, make a bag, donate it to Jumpstart!

Right now, we have canvas panels at Zede’s Sewing Studio that you can pick up in order to make the bags.  If you’re far away, you’ll have to supply your own canvas.  Also, if you don’t have an embroidery machine, we’ll be embroidering “Read” panels at the shop- you can pick them up and make the bags on your sewing machine.

Enjoy the videos.  If you feel inspired, make some bags!  They make great gifts for friends and family as well!

What is Club at Zede’s Sewing Studio?

Every sewing store has a “club”.  They might even have multiple clubs; embroidery club, quilting club, etc.  Zede’s just has one- and it’s a blast.

“Clubs” were basically a marketing tool that sewing machine companies suggested to their dealers a few decades ago.  They’ve stuck around and they’re still going strong- so clearly it was a good idea.  But when Zede bought the store 6 years ago, we made some updates to “club” policy that we thought were necessary to bring it into the 21st century.

Number One- Everyone is welcome at club meetings!  Whether you have one of our machines or not, you can come to club.  You just have to like us and want to have a good time.  Club meetings used to be, and at some stores still are, exclusive to machine owners.  Not us!  We want everyone to learn about what we’re doing and how we’re doing it.  We also want to hear your ideas, no matter what machine you happen to sew on.

Number Two- Club membership is open to anyone, even if you haven’t bought one of our machines.  Check out the policy here.  Once you make your lifetime membership fee, you get 10% off of all notions, threads, patterns, embroidery designs, and other fun stuff at the store.  That discount applies whenever you walk in the store- not just at club meetings- woohoo!

Number Three- Show and Tell.  This is by far the most popular part of club!  You bring something that you have sewn or embroidered and you get entered to win a prize.  Sometimes it’s threads, sometimes it’s needles, sometimes it’s a bag…..you never know ’til you come to club!

See what our customers are saying about club!

Fabric Bowls: Free pattern when you come to class!

As many of you know, Linda B teaches at the shop quite a bit- especially on Tuesdays!  This coming Tuesday, the 28th is no different!

Come join Linda and learn to make a Basic Fabric Bowl.  The class is $15 and she gives you the pattern to make the bowl.

This class is back by popular demand, it’s also a prerequisite for the Flower Bowl class that’s being given later this month.

After taking this class last year, one of our customers ended up making over 50 bowls, several of which she sold at craft shows!  Come see how fun they are to make!

Wounded Heroes: Using Your Sewing Skills For Good!

I think we all know that sewing something can make the world a better place.  It makes people happy to sew and it makes people happy to receive something that has been made with them especially in mind.

Over the years, Zede’s Sewing Studio has participated in a lot of community service projects that put our sewing skills to good use.

Wounded Heroes is a program that helps provide modified garments for members of our armed services who were wounded in combat.  Read more here.  A lot of these individuals now have conditions or disabilities that make it difficult to wear ready made clothing.  So, Wounded Heroes gathers volunteers who can alter things like boxers and athletic shorts to suit the needs of these individuals.

A customer of ours recently introduced us to the program.  We knew that we’d be happy to help right away!  The sewing skills needed to help these people are pretty basic, it’s just a matter of raising awareness.  And we know from experience that when our sewing community sees a need to be met, they meet it with enthusiasm.

Come sew with us on March 2nd from 2-5pm.  No need to bring anything, just you and your smiling face.  We’ll give out jobs to individuals, like pressing, sewing, and cutting to create an efficient assembly line.

We’ll keep you updated on this project and let you know when we schedule more “sew days”!

Serge Ahead: Two Levels Available

We started a very popular continuing education class at Zede’s about 3 years ago. We call it “Serge Ahead”.  Linda B takes the projects from “Ready, Set, Serge” by Georgie Melot and transforms them into mini-lessons densely packed with serging techniques.

Normally, Serge Ahead alternates with Embroidery Insights from month to month.  But, we have so many new serger owners that we’re starting the program all over again as well as continuing through the book with new projects.  So, on our class schedule, you’ll now see “Serge Ahead 1″ and “Serge Ahead 2″.  If you’re new to serging, make sure and come to the first “Serge Ahead 1″ this Saturday, February 25th.

If you have been coming to Serge Ahead but missed a few classes, or if you would like to repeat a technique, make sure and check the schedule to see what’s happening  in Serge Ahead 1.

If you’re a new serger owner, you can come to Serge Ahead 2 as well as Serge Ahead 1.  Just make sure you’ve taken Guide Class first!

If you’re far away from Zede’s, check out Georgie Melot’s book and purchase it- it’s a great serger resource!

How to Make Monster Bookmarks: Free Embroidery Designs

I got the idea to digitize these monster bookmarks from Pinterest- the original pin is on our “Project Ideas” board. The bookmark I saw was made of paper, not fabric, so I decided to dive in and digitize my own version of this super cute concept, using BERNINA V6 Embroidery software.

Let me tell you a little secret before I give you the design for free: I am OBSESSED with digitizing “in-the-hoop” projects. I do them all the time. Keep a look out for more. If anyone ever tells you that digitizing software is a waste of money, they aren’t having nearly as much fun as I’m having!

Moving on…

Watch this video for full instructions.  Even if you don’t make the monster bookmarks right away, you’ll learn a few things!

Here are the files in .ART and .PES format.  If you need to convert files, download ArtLink here.  You don’t have to have a BERNINA machine to download this program- but it’s a wonderful tool for those without software!  Read more here.

What’s a Lock-In?

If you live in the Columbia, MO area, we’re happy to have you close enough to take classes at Zede’s Sewing Studio.  Our classes are fun, just ask anyone you meet in the store!

Even trying to get a group picture was way too fun!

(Picture from the Sew A Throw Lock-In)

One unique thing we do is have “lock-ins”.  That’s right- like those fun slumber parties that kids get to go to!

Here’s the Lock-In format.  You come to the store with a dish and a guest at 5:30, usually on a Friday.  We eat, drink, talk, and then we send our husbands, children, boyfriends, etc. away while we sew, eat, and drink into the wee hours of the morning.

It’s fun!  It’s a throwback to when you got to spend time with just your friends late, late at night.  It’s a little break from the ordinary.

We did decide to let Mallory stay, but she had to promise to be good!

(Sometimes the police come, if things get too rowdy)

Our next lock-in is this Friday, February 24th.  It’s almost full, but sign up if you want to come.

We’ll be making the 1600 inch quilt from Jelly Rolls.  Linda B says we’ll get to piece the entire quilt and start on the quilting!  I’m getting some Jelly Rolls in the store later this week- so keep an eye on the blog to know when they come in- I’ll post pictures!
