Rocci’s Sewing School Gears Up For Fall Class

I am so excited about the fall weather.  It is so cozy inside and cool outside.  This is when we all start thinking about our fall and winter sewing projects.  I am always deciding to sew seasonal items at that particular time of year.  I really should organize my projects and sew fall projects in the summer, winter projects in the fall, srping projects in the winter, and summer projects in the spring.  Well, hmmm maybe eventually I will get that organized with my projects.

As for my students and their projects; monthly lessons start up again at Zede’s Sewing Studio  September  18th & 25th.  We will be meeting for classes 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm.   There is plenty of room for 4-8 students as long as you get your child registered through Zede’s Sewing Studio to reserve his or her spot.  Remember we meet twice a month for 2-hour sessions.  The student advances through whatever sewing level they have aspired to and moves up into their next level of achievement.

Holiday Camp will be hosted in November before Thanksgiving.  I have great plans for our Holiday Camp and hope to see eager young students participate in this exciting camp.

In November we will be hosting another Rocci’s Sewing School Fashion Show.  So tell your children to be sure to have all their projects in good shape to show off at the fashion show.

On The Road Again!

This is the time of the year when many of us find ourselves traveling to visit family and friends.  If you are like me, you can easily be sidetracked to see a few local attractions along the way!  As often as I can–which translates into when I can get the guys to stop, I visit sewing and quilting stores along the way to our destination.

This year I was able to repeat some of my favorite places, and explore some new ones!

Early in July we found ourselves heading towards Atlanta, Georgia. Fortunately for me we went through Paducah, Kentucky.  Of course we had to stop at Hancock’s of Paducah–I was looking for a particular green fabric that I needed to teach my photo transfer workshop.   (Or so my husband believes.)

In August , Zede, Joanne, and myself found ourselves heading to the Chicago area for Bernina’s Version 6 training.  When they suggested checking out Vogue Fabrics, how could I refuse?  I was very motivated to purchase a variety of knits, since I had just taken Zede’s T-shirt workshop.

Then in September, we found ourselves heading North to visit relatives.  Imagine how surprised I was to find out how close Beaver Dam was to Madison, Wisconsin! What was really advantageous was that the van needed an oil change, and so I had an hour to spend shopping and dreaming in Nancy’s Notions Retail store.  By the way, if you are ever in the area say hello to Judy Inman, she took excellent care of me!

Then on our way home, I was surprised at how close New London, Wisconsin was to the Chicago area–so we made a slight detour to Vogue Fabrics again!

Last weekend I was back in Nebraska to help relatives celebrate their anniversary.  So I called up a friend, in Grand Island, Nebraska, who is learning to quilt.  She went with me to a local grocery/variety store, called Skagway, that happens to carry fabric, and to the quilt shop, Material Girl.   We were able to share ideas and techniques as we shopped together.  Some how, I did most of the buying!

While it is always nice to stop when it is just the guys and I, shopping with a friend is always more fun! It is good to be home, but now I have stacks of projects waiting for me to find some time to work on them.   It is a good thing that there are tons of creative ideas at Zede’s Sewing Studio.  It will definately help me work through my piles until my next trip!

Let us know if you have a favorite place to stop on your travels–you might help me plan our next family vacation!

Safe Traveling,

Linda B.

Kids Clubhouse April 10th Project

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Isn’t this pin cushion just adorable.  I found this Free Pattern online and decided to try it out.  WOW!

You can make them in any size. You can stack them like cake layers and make a fantastic pin cushion cake. Dress them up for special occasions like birthdays or Easter or Christmas.  The kids will have a blast making these.

Some of the sewing skills they will learn will be how to gather fabric and how to quilt pieces together with decorative thread designs.  This project will feature decorative stitches on the sewing machines that the kids can choose to utilize.

Please be sure to call Zede’s Sewing Studio and get your child registered for KIDS CLUBHOUSE.  See you all April 10th 10a-noon at Zede’s Sewing Studio.

Trapunto

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Wow!

That is the only word I can think of to express my enthusiasm with the Trapunto technique Linda B. taught the other night.

If you haven’t learned the easy technique of  Trapunto from Linda B. you are missing an amazing discovery.  Check out Zede’s Sewing Studio class schedule and sign up for this class.  It is amazing!

This smooth free-flowing creative adventure just unfolds as the design takes on its unique style.  This techniques makes quick work of a very detailed traditional method.

I know for a fact that I will be making many more Trapunto designs and sharing them with family and friends.   Thank you so much Linda for helping us step out of our comfort zones and explore our creativity.

Show and Tell

gildabaronattemptpicnik My version of Gilda Baron’s project shown on Talking Threads is my show and tell.  Everyone at club thought all my substitutions were a hoot.  Where fabric paints were recommended for the sunset and mountains,  I used finger-paints , leftovers from my home daycare.  Sticky dots are another thing not to be found at ten o’clock on New Year’s Eve- so I cut tiny circles from painter’s tape.  These were used for the sun and flower tops.  Corrugated cardboard was something I thought I had left over from Christmas packaging, but no such luck-I pulled cardboard boxes apart and stripped off the heavy paper layer that covers the corrugation.  This worked really well as a stencil for the flower stems, again with finger-paints.  Bubble wrap I did have, but for some reason the bubbles were covered with a protective layer, which did not peel off.  The end of a pencil dipped in finger-paints and used as a stamp was a great substitute to make more flowers.

I was so impressed with Gilda Baron’s segment on Talking Threads that I bought her book, “The Art of Embroidered Flowers.”  From this book I took her idea for using Pearle cotton to make French knot flowers.  The cotton should have been dyed, but  I painted crochet thread with the finger paints for my substitution.  Also I finger-painted muslin instead of dying it for the cut out flower heads.

I guess it was  funny to listen to all my improves,  but I just wanted to try it right then.  I had a blast making this project.    Maybe it might have been better using the suggested materials, but I thought it was ok for a first attempt.  What better way to welcome the New Year?  Has anyone else tried any of Gilda Baron’s techniques?
