Lots more Artwork to convert to Embroidery

clipart-folder CorelDRAW Essentials 4, one of the newest additions of Bernina Embroidery Software Version 6 comes with lots more pre-loaded graphics than what is found in the Artwork folder (under My Designs).  There are hundreds more graphic files in a folder that comes with the CorelDRAW addition called Clip Art.

The files included in the Clip Art folder are CorelDRAW files, which are Vector files.  Vector files are the types of files you can easily convert to embroidery using the ‘Convert to Embroidery’ button on the Art Canvas Tab.  However, the folder these files are in can be a bit difficult to find when trying to load artwork inside Version 6.  So here’s an easy way to find the CorelDRAW ‘Clip Art’ folder and create a shortcut directly in you’re ‘My Designs – Embroidery Software 6’ folder so you can easily find them again.

To create the shortcut to the Clip Art folder from CorelDRAW.

  • Open up the My Designs – Embroidery Software 6 folder.  To do this go to the Start Menu -> My Computer -> (C:) -> My Designs – Embroidery Software 6
  • Go to the Start Menu -> Programs -> CorelDRAW Essentials 4, then right click on the Clip Art folder and choose Copy.
  • Go back to the My Designs – Embroidery Software 6 folder you opened, inside that folder right Click and choose Copy Shortcut.

Now you will have a shortcut that will point you right to the CorelDRAW graphics files that come installed with that program inside your My Designs folder.

Have fun!

Easier Auto-Digitizing in Version 6

In previous versions of the Bernina Embroidery Software, you had to know how to prepare your artwork before you used the Auto Digitizing tool.  There were two different tools available, Artwork Preparation and Outline Art work Preparation.

With Version 6, auto-digitizing gets even easier as Image Preparation is built right into the Auto-Digitizing tool.  In this version, when you click on the Auto-Digitizing tool and select your image an Image Preparation box is automatically displayed.

To use the new tool in version 6, you are automatically prompted to prepare your image and both artwork prep types are available from the same screen.  You can choose prepare your artwork by reducing colors – best for non-outlined designs, or prep by outline appearance by just moving the slider until your outlines are dark and strong without turning your entire image into an outline.  Once you’ve chosen your image prep options, click OK and you can continue on with the Auto Digitizer tool.

Version 6 – sometimes it’s the little things…

Training on the new version of Bernina Embroidery Software Version 6 was great and there is still a lot more to learn… sometimes though the little details are fun too!  There are some new features that you can use both inside and outside of Version 6.

Thumbnails

Now you can see a preview of any ART file within Windows with the Thumbnail view.  All you need to do is open a folder in Windows that contains ART embroidery files and change the View to Thumbnail view and you can see a preview of the design without opening the Bernina Embroidery Software.

This also works within the software when you use the Open, Save, or Insert Design options.  While navigating through your folder structure you can change the view inside this window to thumbnail view as well.

open-view

To change to Thumbnail View all you need to do is to choose View from the Menu Toolbar at the top of the Window and choose Thumbnail.

New Folder Name

The other small thing happens at installation is a new folder is created for all the default designs that come with Bernina Embroidery Software.  The folder with all the default designs is called “My Designs – Embroidery Software 6”.  This will matter most for those of you upgrading the software from previous version.  This new folder names means your existing “My Designs” folder will not be overwritten when installing Version 6 so you will not lose any designed saved within.

More Version 6 Designer Plus

Here some more great new features of Version 6 Designer Plus…

Lettering – Designer Plus includes 11 new fonts and of course you still have the ability to use True Type fonts.  In addition to the lettering preview that I talked about on day 1, Designer Plus includes new features for reshaping lettering.  You can now move letters from the baseline and resize individual letters.

Outline Design – This is one of Linda B’s favorites – especially great for quilters wanting an easy echo quilting affect.  The outline design allows you to click on design and it will generate one or more outlines around it.  This is great for Echo Quilting or just outlining existing objects.

Morphing – Also another one of Zede’s favorites… this is a great new tool that allows you to manipulate design objects into one of several different morph effects.

There’s lots more including many new fill types – here’s a preview.

There’s more – these are just some of the highlights… stay tuned over the next few weeks as we have more time to experiment and play… also be sure to come to September club where we’ll have more demos and details about when Version 6 will arrive in the store.

Exploring New Features of Bernina Designer Plus

This morning we were able to play with some of the new features of Designer Plus.  We were told that we were “opening the big box of crayons”.

We started with the Quilter Program.  With this portion of the software you are able to choose basic quilt blocks to work with or design your own blocks.

Then you can select the fabrics you wish to use with each block.

If you design your own blocks, you have the option to print out the rotary cutting instructions for your block!

Finally, you can arrange your blocks to check your layout, and you can place quilting patterns on top of the layout.  This gives you the opportunity to evaluate the entire “look” of your quilt before you cut into your fabric!

Note the quilting pattern on each side of the flower, and the flower block.

Just imagine the time you can save by pre-testing your fabrics for your blocks, or the frustration you can avoid by not having to rip out your quilting patterns that just didn’t work with your blocks.

Version 6 Training – Day 2

We were back today for another exciting day of training on the new Version 6 of Bernina Embroidery Software.  Today we focused on the new features of Designer Plus.  Lots more ooohing and aaahing today over the new features… here’s a summary.  Of course everything from Day 1 that is new in Editor Plus also applies to Designer Plus.

Freehand Drawing Tool – there are two new digitizing tools available in Designer Plus – they are Freehand Embroidery – Open Object and Freehand Embroidery – Closed Object.  This allows you to digitize lines by just drawing with your mouse – no left or right clicks.  It will take some practice to use this with a mouse – but if you have a tablet or pen pad you can use it to draw freehand embroidery and let your artistic ability shine.

free-hand

Carving Stamps – One of Zede’s favorite new features!  This is a very fun and exciting new feature in V6 Designer Plus… you can now make an embossed looking pattern within existing stitches.  You pick a pattern or object to ‘stamp’ into an existing embroidery object and get a beautiful effect.  Don’t want to use a patter or object? You can also digitize your own carving stamps.

Buttonholes – There is a new option called Add Buttonholes… (to go along with Add Buttonhole) which allows you to position multiple buttonholes at once and space them evenly apart.  This is a great easy way to add buttonholes to the front of a garment quickly with your embroidery machine.

Multi-hooping is a Designer Plus exclusive and it just got better with Version 6.  You can now split objects with the Splitting Guide in the Hoop Layout screen to make multi-hopping easier

More to come from Designer Plus soon….

Bernina Version 6 Training – Day 1 cont. some more…

Last bit of updates from Thursday… I can’t possibly cover everything but here are a few more updates…

Monogram – there have been a few updates in this tool as well.  You can now rotate the baseline of each individual monogram letter.  The software also auto adjusts your view of the embroidery so you can see the entire monogram in your screen without having to use a zoom tool!

Auto Digitizing Tools – The Auto Digitizer and Magic Wand are still there for our bitmap graphics and there have been improvements made to both of these tools.  The first is you no longer have to remember to prepare your artwork before using them.  Image Prep now comes up when you start to auto digitize.  The Magic Wand has also been improved.  When you hover over the area to digitize it is covered in mesh so you can clearly see what you’re about to select.  See the picture below.

Stay tuned Friday as we go over new features available exclusively in Designer Plus!

Bernina V6 Training—The Momentum is Building!

Wow, is the best word that I can use to describe the new version of Bernina’s Editor Plus.  We just spent the day exploring the new features.  The new software has the CorelDRAW Essential 4, which gives you the ability to use vector files.  This means that we can now work with more graphic files than before.  Imagine the possibilities!

I also loved the color wheel feature.  As you slide the hue slider, the whole design can be changed in a wide color pallet.  Also it matches the thread colors for you to use with the design–what a perk!

Joanne was so excited to get a message posted for you; she even let her ice cream from break melt.  Does that tell you how excited she was to tell you about the software?

I also got a taste of the Quilter portion of the software.  What fun!  I loved being able to select fabric to insert into the block to get a visual for your quilt.  You will also get the accurate measurements to rotary cut your pieces. What a quick and easy way to create a quilt!

Finally, Martin Favre, President of Bernina of America, stopped in to make sure the training was going well.

I can’t wait to share more with you,  Learning V6, Linda B.

Bernina Version 6 Training – Day 1 cont.

Embroidery Canvas is the new Design View and Artistic View in one and there have been lots of exciting changes here too.  You can toggle between Design View and Artistic View within the same screen.

Lettering Preview – Improvements have been made to the Lettering tool as well, when inside the Lettering Object Properties you can preview your lettering in the different fonts.  This is going to come in very handy since I always have to audition several fonts before making my decision.

Color Film – The color film is also has several improvements.  You can now see your color block and your embroidery objects at once.  The color film can also be resized to make these views larger or smaller.

I have a few more exciting new features to share, stay tuned….

Bernina Version 6 Training – Day 1

It’s been an exciting day of training – lots of new and exciting features. Today we focused on Editor Plus features – all of which of course are included in Designer Plus.  Here’s a summary:

Art Canvas is the new Picture View – but so much more!  CorelDRAW Essentials 4 is included within the Art Canvas view which means you can create new graphics directly in the software and convert them to embroidery designs.

In addition, Version 6 allows you to use vector graphics.  Although graphic artists already know what this means don’t be intimidated by the technical name.  Previous to Version 6 we could only use bitmap images in the software.  Being able to use vector graphics not only opens up many more type of picture files to use in the software – but vector graphic files are so similar to embroidery design files that you can convert them to an embroidery design with one click!  No artwork prep necessary, no need to choose from multiple options in an auto digitizing tool, just click a button and you get a beautifully digitized design.  It’s awesome!

Next post… the Embroidery Canvas!
